Working With a Backyard That Had a Past
The yard came with an unusual detail: a swimming pool had been buried beneath it. That is not exactly the standard starting point for an outdoor living project, but it did not change what the homeowners wanted from the space.
They needed more usable room and a better connection between the house and yard. We built the deck wide across the back of the home, creating plenty of space for a dining table, chairs, guests, and whatever else comes out when people are settling in for the night. We used TimberTech Advanced PVC decking in Mahogany for the deck surface. The color was a strong choice for this house. It brings warmth to the blue siding and keeps the white pergola from feeling too stark. The picture-frame border and wide steps give the deck a finished edge without making it look overly formal. We built it from synthetic lumber, giving it the crisp look of a painted wood pergola without adding another high-maintenance surface to the homeowners’ list. Bronze-tinted polycarbonate panels cover the top. They add shade, soften the afternoon sun, and offer some coverage when Wisconsin weather decides not to cooperate with the guest list.
We also built a white composite privacy panel along one side of the deck. It matches the pergola and gives the homeowners some separation from the neighboring yard without boxing in the space.
